Mapúa University ignites next 100 years of academic excellence with new benchmarks for Philippine education

As Mapúa University officially crosses the threshold into its next century of academic excellence this year, the Philippines’ premier engineering and technological powerhouse is launching a bold new epoch. Through a powerhouse combination of global alliances, AI-integrated pedagogy, and soon, the birth of a sustainability-focused college, Mapúa is redefining the landscape of higher education for the next 100 years.

Dr. Dodjie Maestrecampo, President and CEO of Mapúa University and the Mapúa Education Group (MEG), emphasizes that these pioneering steps are not just enhancements—they are a complete charting of a new course for the Filipino learner.

“We are not merely reflecting on a hundred years of success; we are building the future,” says Dr. Maestrecampo. “Through these strategic masterplans and global partnerships, Mapúa is ensuring that the Filipino professional is not just a participant in the global economy, but a leader of it.”

Among the bold and pioneering steps of the University were the strategic partnerships with gaming giant Capcom Singapore, leading research and product deployment company OpenAI, the comprehensive academic collaboration with United States’ #1 school for innovation–Arizona State University (ASU), and the ongoing creation of the Mapúa Green College.

The multi-party alliance with international game publisher Capcom Singapore, global workforce and education solutions provider Prime Manpower, and MEG will develop a games, intellectual property, and digital culture program. The program is designed to hone the capabilities of local creators, engineers, and business professionals for the global gaming industry while promoting the study of intellectual property.

Meanwhile, the partnership with OpenAI makes MEG the first Philippine academic network to introduce an enterprise-grade artificial intelligence (AI) educational suite for students, faculty and non-academic personnel. OpenAI is the same tech company that launched ChatGPT.

Maestrecampo explained that equipping learners and educators on AI will enable its application in an academic and professional setting. “Proficiency and global readiness are priorities for Mapúa,” he added.

Likewise, beginning school year 2026-2027, learners across all segments and programs will experience enhanced courses powered by the Arizona State University’s (ASU) repository of academic programs, access to its suite of micro-credentials, and more opportunities and pathways to ASU and its network of universities across the globe. This international integration will propel MEG to elevate local academic standards, and build up Filipino professionals who can compete and lead at the world stage.

On top of this, the ASU partnership paves the way for the soon-to-be-established Mapúa Green College, a pioneering academic initiative creating the next generation of “green” careers. It would be a dynamic hub for climate resilience, sustainable development, and renewable energy.

Outstanding accounting students shine at the 27th SOASP Grand Finals

The winners and grand finalists of the 27th SOASP, along with leaders from P&A Foundation, Inc., ACPACI, and PICPA.

History has been made as a new champion emerges at the 27th Search for Outstanding Accounting Students of the Philippines (SOASP). The grand finals, held on 20 March 2026 at the Makati Diamond Hotel, marked the culmination of a nationwide program designed to recognize academic excellence, leadership, and the evolving role of accountancy students in the profession.

This year, Vincent Noel Cuaresma of Far Eastern University – Manila rose above a remarkable field to claim the top title, delivering a consistent performance across the day’s rigorous stages. Rounding out the winners’ circle were Razilee De Vera of Kingfisher School of Business and Finance (2nd place), Tyron Jones Acuña of Kingfisher School of Business and Finance (3rd place), Fransh Andrei Abad of Polytechnic University of the Philippines – Manila (4th place), and Leonardo Galang II of Far Eastern University – Manila (5th place). Acuña also earned a special citation as the Highest Scorer in the Qualifying Exam.

Marking its 27th year, SOASP continues a proud tradition of honouring the country’s brightest and most promising future CPAs. This year’s edition was bolder and more inclusive, with representation from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. From a virtual qualifying exam held on 21 February 2026 that saw 615 student‑representatives from 109 schools nationwide, 25 finalists advanced to compete in person at the grand finals.

A legacy of honouring future leaders

A long‑standing collaboration between P&A Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of P&A Grant Thornton, the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA), and the Association of Certified Public Accountants in Commerce and Industry (ACPACI), the SOASP has been sustained and expanded for 27 years, championing academic excellence, leadership, and integrity while widening access through regional participation and technology‑enabled delivery.

In his opening remarks, SOASP Partner‑in‑Charge, Vice Chairman, and Deputy Managing Partner Olivier D. Aznar underscored the human qualities that the search champions.

“Skills may evolve, tools may change, but humanity remains irreplaceable. How we treat people, show empathy, and stay composed and grounded under pressure. These are the qualities that truly distinguish professionals and leaders, and that, in many ways, is what SOASP is about,” Aznar said.

Adding the perspective of the professional community, PICPA National President Gerard B. Sanvictores reminded finalists that the competition is a milestone within a larger growth journey: “This is just one chapter in your journey. It will be a continuous journey and learning experience.” Echoing this forward‑looking view, ACPACI National President Marvin Madrigalejo highlighted the promise on display: “I see today not only outstanding accounting students, but future CPAs and leaders of the profession.”

Closing the message of support from the organisers, P&A Grant Thornton Chairman and Managing Partner, and P&A Foundation, Inc. Chairperson Romualdo ‘Boyet’ V. Murcia III commended the finalists’ effort and resilience: “Your journey is a grounding reminder that success is never accidental; it is built through persistence, resilience, and a commitment to continuous learning.  Each of you has already proven your potential and serves as an inspiration to your fellow students and the younger generation of aspiring accountants.”

Grit, guidance, and growth

Asked how it felt to be named the 27th SOASP Champion, Vincent Noel Cuaresma (FEU–Manila) shared that the moment was equal parts surprise and validation. He had managed his expectations throughout the competition, but standing onstage, he said he could finally appreciate how far consistent effort had taken him. “Sometimes I felt my effort wasn’t enough, but in hindsight, I’ve come a long way,” he reflected. For Vincent, the win is both a milestone and a motivator: a reminder to keep sharpening his fundamentals, stay grounded under pressure, and carry forward the habits that brought him here as he takes the next steps in his professional journey.

His coach, Jerome Perez, highlighted the culture that shaped that growth: a healthy, collaborative competitiveness within Vincent’s circle. The team routinely pushed one another to reach the top while staying close-knit and supportive: proof that you can compete and help each other at the same time. “That’s what helped him come this far,” the coach shared. “I’ve seen his progress from the very start until this moment.”

As the 27th SOASP concludes, the program’s legacy endures: a nationwide, partnership‑driven search that doesn’t just crown a champion, but cultivates grit, camaraderie, and values‑driven leadership—preparing future CPAs to excel and to lift others up as they rise.

LA Chicks Brings the Heat, Wins at QSR Media Asia Awards 2026

As demand grows for more focused, scalable restaurant concepts, one local brand is gaining regional attention.

Metro Manila-based hot chicken chain LA Chicks was recently awarded “Best New Concept” at the QSR Media Asia Awards 2026, an annual Singapore-based program that recognizes restaurant brands designed for long-term viability across markets.

The win puts a spotlight on a model that prioritizes simplicity over variety. Instead of building a wide menu, LA Chicks centers its offering on a single product category: hot chicken, executed across a tight lineup that includes tenders, sandwiches, and bone-in options.

A key feature of the concept is its tiered heat system, where customers can choose between Naked, Mild, Medium, Hot, and Extra Hot. This built-in customization allows the brand to introduce variety without adding operational complexity, a balance that has become increasingly important for fast-growing food businesses.

The approach also translates well into expansion. In under a year, LA Chicks has opened five branches across Metro Manila, signaling a format that is relatively easy to replicate while maintaining consistency in both product and service.

Beyond operations, the brand has leaned into digital to build awareness. Its challenge-driven messaging, anchored on how much spice customers can handle, has helped generate organic engagement, particularly on social platforms where shareable food experiences continue to drive discovery.

Industry platforms like QSR Media have increasingly highlighted concepts that combine clear positioning with efficient execution. LA Chicks’ recognition this year reflects a broader shift toward restaurant models that are not only attention-grabbing but also built to scale.

Visit the nearest LA Chicks branch today and see for yourself. How hot can you handle it?

Solaire Resort Entertainment City Lights the Aisle This May 2026

From Left: Rycel Engalla Director of Hotel Sales & Marketing, David Batchelor SVP of Resort Operations, and Marimil Ermita VP Hotel Operations at the launch of “Light the Aisle”, Solaire Resort Entertainment City’s first bridal fair happening on May 9-10, 2026.

Its inaugural bridal showcase sets the stage for the Philippines’ most distinguished wedding planners, designers and visionaries to bring dream weddings to life.

Every wedding is a new beginning.

For some, it marks the start of life together. For others, it becomes a celebration of a love story that has already stood the test of time — a vow renewal, a milestone anniversary, a golden wedding, or a gathering that honors years of shared memories. Whatever form it takes, the meaning often feels the same: a beautiful occasion made even more meaningful by the people, details, and setting that bring it to life.

This May, Solaire Resort Entertainment City opens that world to couples and families through Light The Aisle: A Luminous Beginning, a two-day Bridal Showcase happening on May 9–10, 2026.

Set within Solaire Resort Entertainment City’s elegant event spaces, the showcase invites guests to imagine how wedding and milestone celebrations can unfold across the property — from the Grand Ballroom and Pre-Function Area to the Pool Deck and Luxury Suites. These spaces set the tone for occasions that can feel intimate, grand, and deeply personal all at once.

A Gathering of Celebrations Shaped by Distinct Signatures

Part of what gives Light The Aisle its pull is the roster behind it.

Among the planners taking part are Christine Ong-Te Events, Events by Miss P, Kim Torres Events, Kiss the Girl Events, Rhed Sarmiento Events, and Sweet Comfort Events Management, — each bringing a point of view that many couples already recognize when searching for the right team behind a meaningful celebration.

Some are known for stylish, highly visual weddings where every detail reads beautifully both in person and in photographs. Others are recognized for polished coordination, romantic atmosphere, or the kind of planning discipline that makes a celebration feel seamless from start to finish.

For the Bridal Showcase, each planner will present a fully realized wedding vignette shaped by that signature style. Rather than simply offering pegs or mood boards, the installations invite guests into settings that already feel layered, considered, and celebration-ready — the kind of spaces where a wedding, a renewal of vows, or an anniversary gathering can immediately be imagined in full.

Light the Aisle – SVP of Resort Operations David Batchelor

The Names Behind the Look, the Mood, and the Memory

Alongside the planners are creative partners whose work also helps define how celebrations are seen and remembered. The showcase opens with a curated selection of sought-after stylists, including Amante Fleurs Event Styling, Events Central by Anna Winstel, Eyecandy Manila Event Styling Co., Ginger Gaddi, Jo Claravall, Kathy Sy King, Kyno Kho, Key Design by Erick Daquioag, Ralph & Co., as additional names are set to join this growing roster of wedding visionaries.

A key moment of the showcase will unfold on May 10 with a bridal fashion show by renowned Filipino designer Val Taguba. Known for refined silhouettes and romantic detailing, Taguba’s couture creations will bring the elegance of the wedding aisle to life on the runway, closing the two-day showcase with a stylish nod to contemporary Filipino bridal fashion.

Serving as the official photography and video partner, Nice Print Photography will document the event’s highlights across the two-day showcase — capturing the installations, runway presentation, and the many celebrations imagined throughout the venue.

Where Ideas Begin to Feel Real

Across two days, guests will be able to move through Solaire Resort Entertainment City’s spaces while gathering ideas for the kind of celebration they hope to create.

The program includes guided venue tours, styled photo corners, food tastings, consultation sessions with planners, designers, and suppliers, live musical performances, bridal masterclasses, and a bridal fashion show. Together, these create a fuller picture of how a celebration may come together — not only in concept, but in atmosphere, movement, and feeling.

Just as important, the showcase places Solaire Resort Entertainment City at the heart of that vision as a destination for meaningful occasions. Whether the celebration calls for a grand ballroom reception, a more intimate exchange of vows, a poolside gathering, or a milestone anniversary marked with family and close friends, the property offers a setting where scale, polish, and personal detail can meet in one place.

This May 9–10, 2026, Solaire Resort Entertainment City welcomes couples, families, and celebration planners to discover Light The Aisle: A Luminous Beginning and explore how meaningful occasions can take shape in a destination built for moments worth remembering.
