Mindanao Unveils First CBFT School: A Scalable Model for Resilient Education

Mindanao proudly inaugurated its first sustainably-constructed school today at Landan Elementary School in Polomolok, South Cotabato.  This pioneering project, in partnership with Dole Philippines, AY Foundation, Mahintana Foundation, Armed Forces of the Philippines, and the local government of Polomolok, marks a significant stride in building resilient and environmentally conscious education infrastructure.

The 175-sqm, two-classroom school building was constructed using BASE’s proprietary Cement-Bamboo Frame Technology (CBFT) combined with a bamboo truss system.  This innovative design offers safer, more sustainable, and disaster-resilient learning spaces. Designed to meet the Department of Education’s (DepEd’s) standards, each classroom also doubles as an evacuation center during typhoons, reflecting a proactive approach to community safety.

The initiative is a core component of the Adopt-A-School Program (AASP), a classroom development program funded by Dole Philippines and A.Y. Foundation, Inc.  The AASP aims to uplift grassroots tri-people communities in the upland areas of Sarangani and South Cotabato Province by improving academic performance through enhanced access to quality education.

“This project demonstrates what can happen when we combine innovation, partnership, and a shared sense of purpose,” said Dole Philippines Senior EVP and FPG President, Masazumi Nishikage.

Added April Evangelista of RCBC, representing A.Y. Foundation, added: “This classroom is more than a structure.  It is a symbol of hope, sustainability, and shared commitment to education.  Built with care and purpose, this represents a future where learning spaces are strong, inclusive, and rooted in community collaboration.”

The school building was built by the Philippine Army’s 549th Engineer “Kapayapaan” Battalion, 6th Infantry Division, showcasing a powerful multi-sectoral collaboration in fostering climate-smart schools that empower communities. The partnership was formalized with a Memorandum of Agreement signed on October 1, 2025, during the groundbreaking ceremony.

“The inauguration of Mindanao’s first CBFT school is a testament to what we can achieve when innovation meets dedication to community and environment,” said Engr. Luis Felipe Lopez, BASE General Manager. “We are not just building classrooms; we are building a more sustainable future. This technology offers a scalable solution to the nation’s classroom backlog, providing resilient, eco-friendly structures that also boost local economy. We invite more government agencies and organizations to join us in making this vision a global reality.”

CBFT structures undergo rigorous testing against typhoons, earthquakes, fire, and insect infestations, ensuring exceptional durability. Beyond resilience, CBFT school buildings demonstrate that sustainability and robust construction can coexist. Lifecycle assessments show that bamboo-integrated construction can reduce embodied CO2 emissions by up to 70% compared to conventional concrete systems, significantly contributing to climate action.

“Improving access to quality education for our upland IP communities is central to the Adopt-A-School Project,” stated Liza Duropan-Lopez, Executive Director of Mahintana Foundation, Inc. “This CBFT school provides a safe learning environment and serves as a beacon of hope and resilience for our tri-people communities, reflecting our commitment to inclusive development.”

The Philippines faces a staggering nationwide classroom backlog of approximately 165,000 classrooms, a challenge that could take decades to address at current construction rates. Experts suggest building at least 7,000 classrooms annually for the next 15 years to substantially bridge this gap. CBFT offers a viable, innovative solution to this urgent need.

DepEd Education Program Supervisor, Michael Poblador expressed gratitude, stating, “We are incredibly grateful for the collaborative spirit that brought this pioneering Cement-Bamboo Frame Technology school to fruition in Mindanao. This initiative directly addresses our urgent need for more classrooms while providing safe, sustainable, and climate-resilient learning spaces for our students. We commend BASE Bahay Foundation and its partners for showcasing an innovative solution that holds immense potential for scaling across the Philippines, helping us build a more robust and future-proof education infrastructure.”

The versatility of CBFT extends beyond school buildings. This technology, accredited by the Accreditation of Innovative Technologies for Housing (AITECH) by the National Housing Authority, is also suitable for non-residential structures like community centers, offices, industrial facilities, and commercial buildings. This demonstrates bamboo’s significant potential as a flexible and sustainable construction material for diverse infrastructure needs.

BASE, through its implementing partners, has already completed four (4) school buildings with two (2) more under construction, and another 2 upcoming projects across the Philippines, reinforcing its leadership in bamboo construction. Globally, BASE has built over 2,300 CBFT structures, sheltering more than 10,500 individuals and achieving over 40,000 tCO2 savings. Furthermore, CBFT supports local farmers by establishing a value chain, creating livelihood opportunities, and upskilling workers through technical training, fostering a more sustainable future for all.

Urban Farming Comes to Condo Living with SMDC Nature’s “The Good Grow”

For many city residents, growing food at home has long felt like a luxury reserved for houses with gardens and backyards. But at SMDC Nature’s Vine Residences, residents recently discovered that growing food at home does not require a backyard or a large garden. Sometimes, all it takes is a small pot, a handful of soil, and the willingness to start.

In a recent sustainability initiative called The Good Grow, SMDC Nature—SMDC’s residential segment centered on nature-inspired living—introduced urban farming to condominium living, showing residents how herbs and vegetables can thrive even within compact urban spaces.

Held as a hands-on workshop within the community, the program guided residents through the basics of planting, nurturing, and harvesting edible plants suitable for condo environments. From basil and mint to leafy greens, participants learned how a few pots, a simple soil mix, and consistent care can transform small corners of a home into productive green spaces.

Farm Operations Supervisor Ruben Flojo (right) and Licensed Agriculture Trainer Eisen Parungao (left) of St. Isidore the FARMer Learning Center guide residents through the fundamentals of urban farming during The Good Grow workshop at Vine Residences, demonstrating how herbs and vegetables can thrive even in compact condominium spaces.

The initiative reflects SMDC Nature’s broader commitment to creating communities that encourage healthier, more mindful ways of living.

“For many people, sustainability can feel like a big concept,” said Susan G. Nicdao, Vice President and Head of the SMDC Nature Segment. “But sometimes it begins with something very simple, such as planting herbs in your own home, cooking with something you’ve grown yourself, or sharing seedlings with a neighbor. Those small acts make sustainability real and personal.”

Nicdao added that, moving forward, an urban garden will form part of SMDC Nature’s standard project deliverables, reinforcing the company’s commitment to integrating sustainable practices into everyday community living.

Beyond the environmental benefits, the workshop also brought residents together in unexpected ways.

Participants exchanged planting tips, compared seedlings, and shared ideas on how to maximize their small condo spaces for gardening. Conversations that began with soil and seeds quickly turned into neighborly exchanges—demonstrating how shared activities can strengthen a sense of community within residential developments.

One Vine Residences homeowner shared that the experience changed her perspective on condo living.

“I always thought gardening was something you needed a yard for,” she said. “But after seeing how easy it is to grow herbs on a balcony, I realized you can create a little garden anywhere—even in the city.”

For Jica Sy, Vice President and Head of Design, Innovation, and Strategy at SMDC, initiatives like The Good Grow highlight how residential developments can support more intentional lifestyles.

“Today’s homeowners are increasingly drawn to spaces that allow them to reconnect with nature, even within an urban setting,” Sy explained. “When residents start growing herbs on their balconies or exchanging harvests with neighbors, sustainability becomes something they experience firsthand.”

Participants of the workshop also received The Good Grow starter kits, which included planting pots, soil medium, seed packets, and a beginner-friendly guide designed specifically for condominium environments.

Vine Residents learn the basics of planting and nurturing edible plants during The Good Grow workshop, discovering how even small condo spaces can support sustainable, homegrown produce.

Following its launch at Vine Residences, SMDC plans to roll out The Good Grow to other SMDC Nature communities, including Field Residences, Grace Residences, and Style Residences, bringing the initiative to more residents who want to incorporate small but meaningful green practices into their daily lives.

In cities where space is often limited, programs like The Good Grow demonstrate that sustainability does not always require sweeping change. Sometimes, it simply begins with a pot of soil, a handful of seeds, and the decision to grow something at home.

About SMDC Nature

Why “Nature”? Because that’s what it brings back into people’s lives — space to breathe, room to grow, and time to reconnect.

SMDC Nature reflects our commitment to creating communities where nature is not a design element — it’s part of daily life. This is where families wake up to greener surroundings, walkable open spaces, and homes that feel quieter, calmer, more grounded. From solar panels to rainwater harvesting, every community under the SMDC Nature segment is built with sustainability at its core. Plant nurseries, herb gardens, and energy-efficient building systems aren’t upgrades — they’re part of the blueprint.

Add to that thoughtful touches like pet parks, senior-friendly walkways, and accessible design for persons with disabilities. What you get is not just a place to live, but a place that lets you live well.

Located in key cities and growing suburbs, SMDC Nature offers homes that are close to essentials — SM malls, schools, transport — but with more sky above, more green around, and more room to just be.

At its heart, SMDC Nature is built on one belief: A well-lived life isn’t rushed. It’s rooted.

A GameZone Tour Feature Story: A Husband’s Loving Sacrifice

Tatay Igno raises his GTCC Summer Showdown trophy

Winners are made, and champions are destined to make a change. The GameZone TableGame Champions Cup (GTCC): Summer Showdown, now rebranded as the GameZone Tour Tongits Plus Championship Cup, introduced a Tongits tournament with a new format and a prize pool of 10 million pesos in June of last year.

One player, Benigno Casayuran, also known as Tatay Igno, is a 62-year-old retired resident of Candelaria, Quezon Province. He and his family ran a small sari-sari store and relied on his pension for their day-to-day expenses. A story of sacrifice and inspiration, Tatay Igno made his way to the top by keeping a steady mindset. He initially joined the tournament as an underdog, competing against 93 elite Tongits players.

“Mga 10 years na siguro ako naglalaro. Sa baraha pang-libangan at pampalipas oras lang, ngayon dun ako naglalaro sa GameZone app,” he said in an exclusive interview with GameZone, crediting his wife as his inspiration in joining the tournament.

“Inspirasyon ko siyempre ang misis ko, para po sa medication niya kasi na-diagnose siya ng cancer. Naging problema ang pagluwas sa Maynila, medyo pahirapan kasi kulang sa budget, kaya nanghingi ako ng tulong sa kaibigan at tsaka sa aking kapatid para mabayaran ko yung accommodation ko sa hotel noon.”

Tatay Igno fought his way to the Grand Final, using his years of experience and skills to conquer the Summer Showdown.

From dropping out of college to working different day jobs until retirement, playing through the GameZone app, to making it to the tournament finals, and getting the win, Tatay Igno ultimately became the Summer Showdown’s oldest champion, forever etching his name in the list of champions in GameZone’s young history.

Tatay Igno with his wife enjoying the GameZone app

“Lubos lubos po yung pasasalamat ko sa Diyos, kasi hiniling ko lang po makapasok sa top 9, pero binigay niya po sa amin yung grand champion,” Tatay Igno stated.

When asked about his family’s life after the tournament, he credited his wife for the inspiration; after all, she is the reason they can now afford what they need for her treatment and healing.

“Hindi na po kami nahihirapan kung saan kukuha sa pambili ng gamot ng asawa ko, hindi na ako nahirapan sa paghatid sa kanya kasi nakakuha ako ng sasakyan.”

He showcased his veteran skills and perseverance throughout the tournament, overcoming challenges and using his family as his primary motivation. Today, Tatay Igno’s wife is cancer-free, slowly regaining her strength with the help of regular check-ups. Tatay Igno shared a message on responsible gaming, and for those joining the upcoming GameZone Tour.

Tatay Igno during an interview after the events of the GTCC: Summer Showdown

DigiPlus and GameZone are set to bring the fun to new heights this year. As the leading company in digital entertainment, the stakes are raised with the addition of more games through the seasons, with multiple prizes up for grabs. Players can join this year’s upcoming tournament through the GameZone app.

The GameZone Tour offline stage took place on March 7-8 and was one of the most exciting tournaments that new fans and seasoned gamers enjoyed, bringing the fun wherever it goes. Experience the Real GameZone, head on to https://gzone.ph to know more.

GameZone in partnership with Tropical Hut made the Chinese New Year 2026 exceptional

GameZone fueled the world’s oldest Chinatown as it celebrated the 2026 Chinese New Year last February 17 in partnership with one of the country’s most beloved food chains, Tropical Hut.

To elevate cultural relevance, GameZone graced the crowd with dragon and lion dancers, bringing rhythmic drumbeats, prosperity, joy, and good luck while they chased away evil spirits and negative energy.

In addition, the brand offered event-goers ₱100 Tropical Hut gift certificates as a special treat in light of the celebration of the Chinese New Year. It was GameZone’s way of spreading fun and saying thank you to the attendees.

One of GameZone’s lucky winners of ₱2,000 in cash

Selected guests also bagged ₱2,000 in cash prizes after correctly answering trivia questions and completing GameZone’s roulette challenges.
