Mondelēz International Runs for Women Empowerment

Celebrating International Women’s Month by helping accelerate action for gender equality

MANILA, Philippines – In celebration of International Women’s Month 2025, Mondelēz International in the Philippines reaffirmed its commitment to women empowerment and gender equality by participating in the Women’s Run PH for the second consecutive year. Organized in partnership with the Filipina CEO Circle, the event saw forty-two female and male employees from the company take part, reflecting the organization’s ongoing efforts to accelerate women in leadership and create an inclusive workplace.

Accelerating Action. Mondelēz International’s women and men took part in the last year’s Women’s Run, including its Managing Director Aleli Arcilla (3 rd from left).

The global theme for this year’s International Women’s Day, “Accelerate Action,” underscores the urgent need to bridge the gender gap. According to data from the World Economic Forum, at the current pace, full gender parity will not be achieved until 2158—five generations from now. As a workplace that values diversity, Mondelēz International remains committed to challenging this timeline by ensuring women are empowered at every level of the organization.

At the leadership level, women play a significant role in shaping the company’s direction. Currently, 67% of Mondelēz International’s top leadership team is comprised of women, ensuring balanced decision-making and strong female representation. At the helm is Aleli Arcilla, the first female Managing Director of Mondelēz International in the Philippines. Arcilla is also a celebrated woman leader, having been part of the 2024 Asia CEO Circle of Excellence for Woman CEO of the Year and a recipient of the 2025 Honorary Mansmith Sales Master Award.

“Gender equality is not just about representation, it is about creating an environment where women can lead, thrive, and make an impact,” said Arcilla. “True progress requires action, and that means empowering women at all levels, from the boardroom to the communities we serve.”

Beyond leadership, Mondelēz International continues to push for workplace policies that support women’s success. The company continues to have in place flexible work arrangements, recognizing the needs of working mothers and caregivers. Leadership development programs provide mentoring and coaching to equip women with the skills and confidence to take on greater responsibilities. Employee wellness initiatives include women’s health talks, mental wellness programs, and lactation facility support for new mothers, ensuring an integrated approach to gender equity.

Outside the workplace, the company’s commitment extends to community-based initiatives that create economic opportunities for women. Programs such as Aling Tindera, which empowers women micro-entrepreneurs in waste management, and its Supplier Diversity Initiative, which prioritizes partnerships with women-led businesses, reinforce the company’s broader mission of supporting women beyond corporate spaces.

With the call to accelerate action for gender equality, Mondelēz International remains dedicated to making tangible progress. By championing women in leadership, advocating for inclusive policies, and driving impact beyond the workplace, the company continues to take meaningful steps toward a more equitable future.

UERM Medical Center Opens New center-owned CT-MRI Facilities to Address Rising Stroke Cases

(From Left) UERM Medical Center Radiology Services Department Head Dr. Mercedes Onagan, President and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Norbert Lingling Uy, Board of Trustees Member Dr. Ester Garcia, Senior Vice President for Finance and Chief Administrative Officer Allan Quijano and Vice President for Hospital Services and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Maribeth de los Santos.

Continuing its legacy of providing innovative care in the Philippines

Manila, Philippines – With the recent report of increase in stroke cases observed after this holiday season by the Department of Health (DOH)1, UERM Medical Center takes a groundbreaking step in enhancing stroke diagnosis and treatment by launching its new CT-MRI facilities.

Stroke remains one of the leading causes of death and disability in the country2. As the first hospital to house and acquire CT Scan, UERM Medical Center’s new-center owned Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) facilities are set to play a vital role in ensuring faster, more accurate diagnosis, which is crucial in improving outcomes for stroke patients.

“Time is of the essence in stroke care. The new CT-MRI facility will enable us to provide rapid and precise imaging, ensuring patients receive timely interventions that can significantly enhance recovery and survival rates. This aligns perfectly with our institution’s role as an Acute Stroke Ready Hospital, certified by the Stroke Society of the Philippines, and one among 813 hospitals with this designation,” said Dr. Maribeth T. de los Santos, Vice President for Hospital Services and Chief Medical Officer.

Enhancing Patient Experience Through Personalized Diagnostic Care

Undergoing imaging procedures can be overwhelming, especially for first-timer patients or young individuals. Recognizing this, UERM Medical Center offers a unique patient-centered approach by allowing patients to listen to their favorite music during scans, helping them stay relaxed and comfortable.

“In establishing our own imaging facilities, we wanted to elevate our standard of care. Our healthcare professionals ensure the procedures go smoothly while incorporating music to create a calming environment. Music has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, and we believe this simple yet thoughtful addition will enhance the overall patient experience,” Dr. Norbert Lingling Uy, President and Chief Academic Officer of UERM Medical Center expressed.

Comprehensive Overview of CT Scan

CT scans are widely regarded as a safe and efficient diagnostic tool. The procedure is non-invasive, minimizing the risk of complications, and the radiation dose is carefully regulated to ensure patient safety.

  • Cranial CT Scans: Essential in detecting brain hemorrhages, suspected strokes, tumors, and abnormalities, CT angiography aids in planning interventions such as stenting.
  • Chest CT Scans: Used for detecting lung nodules, fibrosis, infections, and assessing calcium deposits in coronary arteries.
  • Trauma CT Scans: Helps in evaluating fractures, collapsed lungs, and other trauma-related conditions.
  • Abdominal and Pelvic CT Scans: Effective in diagnosing liver injuries, appendicitis, tumors, and vascular conditions. Also used for colorectal cancer screening and work-up of stone in the urinary tract or blood in the urine.
  • Skeletal CT Scans: Provides valuable insights for assessing degenerative diseases, joint disorders, bone tumors, and aiding in surgical planning.
  • Minimally Invasive CT-Guided Interventional Procedures: These include biopsies, fluid drainage, vertebroplasty, medication delivery, and tumor localization among others for precise treatment.

Investing in MRI technology underscores UERM Medical Center’s commitment to delivering expert care though advanced imaging solutions.

“MRI remains unparalleled in diagnostic accuracy. It is safe, non-invasive, and plays a crucial role in both early detection and complex surgical planning. This investment is a testament to our commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centered care,” Dr. Uy added.

MRI technology enables the diagnosis and management of various neurological, vascular, and systemic conditions, including:

  • Neurological Conditions: Used for detecting causes of dementia, brain tumors, seizures, and epilepsy. It also aids in diagnosing aneurysms and venous thrombosis.
  • Abdominal Imaging: Helps in identifying tumors, infections, infections, and unexplained weight loss and bloating, among others. Also used for MRCP (Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography) to evaluate gallstones, pancreatitis, and other hepatobiliary conditions.
  • Chest MRI: Provides detailed imaging of the lungs, heart, blood vessels, and surrounding structures.
  • Head and Neck MRI: Essential in assessing conditions affecting the brain, eye sockets, salivary glands, and throat.
  • Musculoskeletal MRI: Crucial in diagnosing injuries, inflammatory disorders, and conditions such as arthritis and herniated discs.

“With these advanced imaging technologies, targeted scans take only minutes, while whole-body evaluations can be completed efficiently. This ensures quicker diagnoses, allowing healthcare professionals to make well-informed decisions for optimal patient management,” concluded Dra. de los Santos.

Strengthening UERM’s Commitment to Excellence in Patient Care

The integration of CT and MRI technologies reinforces UERM Medical Center’s mission of delivering world-class healthcare. By providing cutting-edge diagnostic solutions, the hospital ensures early stroke detection and comprehensive imaging for other critical conditions, furthering its role as a leader in patient-centered medical innovation.

UERM Medical Center invites patients and healthcare professionals alike to take advantage of these state-of-the-art facilities and join in the shared mission of improving health outcomes nationwide.

KTO Manila Organized the Korea Transit Tour Seminar 2025 for Philippine Travel Partners

The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) hosted the highly successful Korea Transit Tour Seminar 2025 at Lanson Place Mall of Asia on March 14, 2025, bringing together 150 key partners from travel agencies, airlines, and media. The seminar aimed to showcase Korea’s transit tourism offerings and foster collaboration between travel professionals to promote Korean tourism to Filipino travelers.

The event began with a warm welcome from Mr. Park Younghee, Director of KTO Manila, who expressed appreciation for the strong partnerships cultivated with the Philippine travel sector over the years. He was followed by KTO Assistant Manager, Ms. Jen Uy, who presented key insights into the growing popularity of transit tourism, especially among Filipino travelers.

Mr. Younghee Park, Director of Korean Tourism Organization

In her presentation, Ms. Uy highlighted that in 2024, Incheon International Airport welcomed about 620,000 Filipino transit passengers. The Philippines ranked second in terms of passengers utilizing transit tourism products, representing 12.4%. She also highlighted the two types of visa-free entry available for Filipino transit passengers:

  • 30-Day Visa-Free Entry for passengers holding visas to countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and several EU countries. Passengers must meet specific conditions, including holding a confirmed onward flight ticket and having a clean immigration record.
  • 3-Day Visa-Free Entry for travelers transferring through Incheon Airport to a third country, as long as they participate in a recognized transit tour program.

KTO further elaborated on their transit tour offerings, including the Free Transit Tour for passengers with layovers under 24 hours, and the K-Stopover Program for layovers between 24 to 72 hours. Both programs provide a variety of options for travelers to explore Korea’s rich culture, with the Free Transit Tour offering flexible tour durations, while the K-Stopover Program includes affordable packages featuring accommodation, transportation, airport lounges, and shopping vouchers.

The seminar also covered the introduction of the E-Arrival Card and the 2025 APEC Summit in Gyeongju.

E-Arrival Card is a new program for online submission of entry declarations, which started on February 24, 2025. Filipino travelers must now submit their entry information online up to three days before they arrive in Korea, streamlining the immigration process.

The 2025 APEC Summit in Gyeongju offers a prime opportunity to showcase Korea’s traditions and culture globally, while promoting international expansion. It will be the first APEC summit held in a city with a concentration of UNESCO World Heritage sites, aligning with the government’s vision of making Korea a desirable place to live.

The event provided a valuable opportunity for Filipino travel agents to meet directly with key airlines such as Korean Air and Asiana Airlines and discuss the details of their transit flight services, as well as explore ways to further promote Korea’s transit tourism products.

KTO continues to enhance the visibility of Korea’s tourism offerings, catering to the growing number of Filipino tourists passing through Incheon Airport, and strengthening the travel and tourism ties between Korea and the Philippines. “We are excited to see the strong interest in Korea’s transit tours from our travel partners in the Philippines,” said Mr. Park Younghee. “This seminar is just the beginning of what we hope will be a fruitful partnership in promoting Korea as a top transit tour destination for Filipino travelers.”

The Lasting Mark of Care: Celebrating 80 Years of Alaga

What does it mean to truly leave a mark? Sometimes, it’s in the simplest gestures—a comforting touch, a reassuring word, or a quiet sacrifice made out of love. These small acts of care can create ripples that change lives in ways that people may not immediately see. This is the heart of Unilab’s 80th-anniversary celebration: sa simpleng alaga, malaki ang nagagawa (through simple care, a big impact is made).

Care is not measured by its size but by its lasting impact. A mother’s gentle hand can ease the pain of a sick child. Neighbors sharing their time to lend a helping hand can finish a difficult chore. A young lad helping an elderly lady cross the street can keep her safe. A teacher’s word of encouragement can inspire a failing student to persevere and chase their dreams. A doctor’s reassuring words can give hope to a worried patient. A sudden call from a friend can perk up a stressful day. These everyday simple moments of alaga (care) leave marks that shape individuals, families, and even an entire community.

“For 80 years, Unilab has been committed to ensuring that quality healthcare reaches every Filipino. But beyond medicine, we recognize that true alaga is in the small, everyday acts of care that create ripples of impact,” says Alexander S. Panlilio, Corporate Vice President of Unilab. “This anniversary is a celebration of the many ways Filipinos show alaga and malasakit (compassion)—from our healthcare professionals to parents, teachers, mentors, and even strangers who lend a helping hand.”

    Different Marks of Alaga

Behind every success story are individuals who have willingly given their alaga, leaving a mark that shaped a bright future.

A Love that Inspires. Dr. Reinerio Prieto in a selfie with his late mother, Gregoria Prieto, who inspired him to leave his mark on others as a doctor.

One such story is that of Dr. Reinerio Prieto, the person’s life story that became the inspiration behind Unilab’s anniversary film. Dr. Prieto’s first encounter with care was not in a hospital, but in the quiet acts of love he experienced at home. His mother, who was a teacher, was very hands-on in taking care of him and his siblings. When it came to Dr. Prieto’s dreams, she did not leave anything to chance. She was with him every step of the way—encouraging him, nurturing him, and standing by him through every challenge.

“My mother was a very strong woman. Bata pa lang ako hanggang sa naging doktor na, I drew a lot of my strength from her. And it wasn’t the big gestures she made—’yung little things ang tumatak sa akin. A nod of reassurance, a pat on the back for comfort, her smile. ‘Pag nagkasakit ako, siya ang nag-aalaga at nagbibigay ng gamot. The baon she prepared for me every day. These seemingly small things gave me a lot of motivation every time,” said Dr. Prieto.

The impact that Dr. Prieto’s mother had on him is the force that drives him to help patients and communities during medical missions all around the Philippines. He knows that a personal touch of alaga can be life-changing for someone. He understands that each patient is a son, father, sister, or mother to someone else. Treating them well means they will be able to continue caring for their loved ones. This ripple effect started with his mother, and now, he is passing on her kind of care to his patients. “Napaka-eye opening ang pagpunta sa mga medical mission. Magugulat ka sa kondisyon ng maraming lugar that there’s a lack of supply of medicine, infrastructure, healthcare personnel—you name it,” said Dr. Prieto. “That’s why as doctors we know the impact our presence makes, especially to the people wanting to seek care. I personally make sure that when I attend medical missions, I give my complete attention to the patient in front of me. Kukumustahin ko siya, and as much as possible I try to explain the diagnosis and treatment carefully kasi natatakot din sila. People are sometimes afraid to ask questions. So, I tell them, nanay o tatay, kung may tanong kayo wag ho kayo matakot.”

A Doctor’s Ripple of Impact. Photo shows Dr. Prieto in one of his medical missions where he puts into practice the life lessons he learned from his mother.

Dr. Rei remembers the power of simple acts of care that his mom inspired him to leave his own mark on others. “Like my mom, those who have left a mark through their care are the ones that we remember. ‘Yung impact nila lives on in every life they’ve touched. Nakaka-inspire ‘yun, kaya sana maraming Pilipino rin ang ma-inspire on how they, too, can make a difference,” said Dr. Prieto.

A Call to Pay It Forward

Marka ng Alagang Unilab. A community scene depicting the main character in Unilab’s 80th Anniversary Film, inspired by the true to life story of Dr. Prieto.

Care is not just about receiving—it is a force we must keep passing forward. Sa Simpleng AlagaMalaki ang Nagagawa is more than a reflection of Unilab’s 80-year legacy—it is a call to each of us, from all walks of life, to take part in creating a better world. No act of care is ever too small. A kind word, a helping hand, or simply showing up for someone are simple gestures that can create ripples reaching farther than we could ever expect. It is a reminder that each of us has the power to leave a mark through the simplest acts of care. Just like Dr. Prieto’s life story, every story of care matters because it can create a ripple of change that can impact lives, communities, and generations to come.

Unilab Partners with Yellow Boat of Hope for BARMM Students

The paddle boats donated by the employees of Unilab to Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation represent the company’s solidarity with the organization’s advocacy in supporting the children and their families at the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

With the Philippines as an archipelago of over 7,600 islands, access to essential services such as education and healthcare can be a challenge for communities without proper and safe means of transportation.

One of the affected sectors of these challenges are the young students of far-flung communities, as they often need to travel across rivers and seas, wading, swimming, or using makeshift rope bridges and boats to reach their classrooms.

These are children who dream of reaching their goals, determined to change the course of their lives and that of their families by obtaining an education. However, there are times they are battling hard against life’s harsh currents. Their parents often lack the financial resources to send them to school, and this includes providing them with the means to travel safely to school.

As a company that promotes and lives its core values of Husay, Malasakit, and Bayanihan, leading pharmaceutical and healthcare firm Unilab, Inc. (Unilab) has partnered with the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation to donate 30 boats for the safe journey of students in communities of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

    Safe Passage to Knowledge

The Yellow Boat of Hope is a nonprofit founded in 2010 that aims to provide access to education for children in remote and poverty-stricken areas of the Philippines by providing them with boats painted bright yellow to use as “school buses” for their children.  The boats note only serve as a means of transportation but also symbolize hope and a brighter future for the children. As of December 2024, they have donated 5,485 yellow boats in marginalized communities, along with other initiatives such as school buildings, starter classrooms, dormitories, and education hubs with the help of different partner organizations.

The 30 Unilab boats will be donated for the use of students in the BARMM fishing communities of Pagasinan, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi; Luuk Tongkil, Banguingui, Sulu; and Amaloy, Ungkaya Pukan, Basilan.

The Sama Bajaus of Pagasinan are a coastal-based Muslim indigenous people of Tawi-Tawi. They are among the poorest communities in Mindanao, facing intergenerational poverty and often experiencing marginalization and exclusion. Living far from the mainland, they rely on boats, which are often rented from businesses for their livelihood as fisherfolk, and to reach essential destinations, including schools.

In Luuk Tongkil and Amaloy, many fishermen also don’t have their own boats and often have to borrow or rent boats for a hefty sum from their neighbors in order to fish. The parents are not able to support their kids’ schooling because they do not earn enough money.

Many children in these communities struggle to complete their education due to financial constraints, as the parents would understandably choose to use their rented boat to fish instead of bringing their children to school.

    Positive change for Filipino communities

Unilab Corporate Vice President Alex Panlilio says, “Through this donation, we are bringing ripples of change to our fellow Filipinos in BARMM. With the boats that we are donating, more children can go to school safely.  We believe that access to education can empower our children and help more families and communities participate in building our country.”

Dr. Anton Lim, Co-Founder, President, and Chief Boat Paddler of Yellow Boat of Hope says, “Through our partnership with Unilab, we are reminded that true change is sparked by harnessing the great Bayanihan spirit of our nation. Together, we are not just building boats or schools—we are building hope, breaking the chains of intergenerational poverty, and empowering communities through education. In places where dreams are scarce and opportunities are few, this partnership breathes life into the belief that every child deserves a chance to rise. Every yellow boat that sails carries not just students but the promise of a brighter tomorrow. This is the heart of “Alagang Unilab”—a steadfast commitment to transforming lives and creating ripples of kindness that uplift generations.”

Now celebrating its 80th anniversary, Unilab is committed to engaging its employees and partnering with organizations and communities as a coming together of each individual contribution towards a stronger, healthier, more resilient Philippines.

Panlilio adds, “This coming together for the good of our communities is the core of Alagang Unilab, which starts with the care, empathy, and spirit of volunteerism of our employees. As we celebrate our 80th year, we are committed to sustaining our continuous efforts in addressing identified gaps through ripples and waves, which are designed to bring hope and positive change.”
