MANILA, PHILIPPINES—Engineering students from the University of the Philippines (UP) recently boarded the Circular Explorer, the solar-powered research and recycling vessel by Holcim currently making its rounds along coastal areas in the Philippines.
Held in partnership with One Earth – One Ocean and Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation (ASSIST), the field activity is part of the elective course on Sustainable Design and Construction (CE 197) offered by the UP Diliman College of Engineering in partnership with Holcim Philippines Inc. The course teaches aspiring engineers about sustainable practices in design and construction that balances economic, environmental, and social interests—the goal of Circular Economy, a primary advocacy of Holcim Philippines.
Students of the Institute of Civil Engineering of the University of the Philippines Diliman experience what it’s like on-board the Circular Explorer and attend a further discussion about circular economy.
Louis Vincent Lee, a student from the Institute of Civil Engineering of the University of the Philippines Diliman, shared about his experience on the Circular Explorer, saying “It was an eye-opening and eye-catching experience to see all these sustainable technologies being incorporated in solving a big problem like plastic pollution in an area as infamous as Manila Bay. I hope to incorporate these things in my own field in the construction of sustainable homes and sustainable infrastructure.”

Manila, Philippines—Researchers from diverse backgrounds in engineering and biological sciences recently graduated from the Plastics Research Methods Intensive Educational and Research Stay (PReMIERS) Fellowship Program, an environmental research collaboration on ocean plastics, a growing concern worldwide.
The PReMIERS Fellowship Program is a capacity-building program under the Circular Explorer Project, a collaboration between UP MSI, Marine Environment Resources Foundation Inc., Holcim, Circular Explorer, and One Earth One Ocean. Up-and-coming research fellows embark on a two-month program across the Philippines, in relation to the science exploration of the Circular Explorer—a research vessel designed by Holcim and One Earth-One Ocean to recover marine waste and provide data to academic bodies such as UP and the DOST. At the end of the program, the fellows will be part of a wider network of around 100 researchers from 50+ universities and national agencies across the country who had also been intensively trained by a team led by Dr. Onda and supported by the Holcim Group through the Circular Explorer project since October 2022.

The Circular Explorer is not just a vessel, it’s also an educational center empowering local communities to help raise awareness and educate people on the importance of marine preservation and the circular economy. Fellows Erish T. Daranciang, M.Eng and Christian Mark S. Guyo, M.Sc., both doing their PhD programs in UP Diliman; Leomered P. Medina, a M.Ed. student from Bulacan State University; and Christsam Joy S. Jaspe-Santander, M.Eng., a PhD student from University of San Carlos, showcased their research on marine waste using the data collected onboard the Circular Explorer. These studies are key to understanding and crafting science-based and data-driven interventions and policies in solving marine waste issues in the Philippines, where ocean plastics present a growing environmental problem.
“A lot of research has already been done, a lot of expertise built, and a number of publications have come out, but we still have a long way to go. It’s a challenge to decentralize what we know to encourage more scientists to do research in the field and contribute to the further understanding of the problem,” says Dr. Deo Onda, Associate Professor of the University of the Philippines – Marine Science Institute (UP MSI). “The PReMIERS program contributes to this by creating experts, one fellow at a time.”

During the fellowship, they were equipped with tools and skills needed to conduct plastics research under the supervision of a core of mentors – from data collection in Manila Bay onboard the Circular Explorer, to microplastics extraction and analyses in Bolinao Marine Laboratory in Pangasinan, to application of AI and data analytics in UP Baguio.
Speaking at the ceremony, Samuel Manlosa Jr., Head of Geocycle of Holcim Philippines advised the new graduates. “The problem needs a lot more attention, and scientists are the ones that know how to contextualize the problem in a way that can be more appreciated,” he says.
“Don’t stop when the study gets published. From being a scientist to being an advocate, use data to transform. And if we do that, there’ll be more of a push to collaborate, and eventually affect policy that benefits the environment.”
True to this goal, the PReMIERS Fellowship Program is designed to train the fellows to become systems thinkers, effective communicators, and advocates on the use of science and data in informing and educating the public about plastics pollution.

About The Artists
Cocoi Base
Cocoi Base is an architect and visual artist based in Bicol. When architectural concepts cannot be manifested into a physical form due to limitations of materiality and physics, he draws these ideas on paper and canvases. His works are visual concepts of structures, machinery, spaces, events, and projections of how things can be, should have been or as it is, condensing each subject to its barest and most basic form until only the essential geometries, composition and color emerge.
His works were exhibited at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, Gateway Gallery, Gateway Art Fair, The Manila Bang Show, Art Camp, The Grey Space, Arte Bettina, Gallerie Anna, Art Fair Philippines, M Gallery, Savage Mind, and in Art in the Park. His first solo exhibition Structures and Experience was launched at Gateway Gallery in 2023. He holds an architecture degree from Adamson University.
Gab Brioso
Gab Brioso is a designer, artist and an architect who thinks about design holistically. Trained and educated in the discipline of architecture, he understands the technical and creative implications of a product; be it a website, an object, an art piece or even to the scale of a space. He takes interest in the intersection of digital and analog processes. His passion to enhance people’s experience of a design product, both digitally and physically, is what fuels his work. He holds an architecture degree from the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde and a master’s degree in fine arts from the Philippine Women’s University. He is currently teaching in De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, Asia Pacific College, and in Ateneo de Manila University. He also attended The Brown Bauhaus’ MetaArch Advanced Course in Modern Aesthetics. His works were exhibited at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, Gateway Gallery, The Manila Bang Show, Art Camp, The Grey Space, Art in the Park, and Art Fair Philippines. He was a grantee of the Anakbanwa Creative Residency Program. His first solo exhibition was held at Backroom Gallery in 2022. He is one of the founding members of The Authenticity Zero Collective.
Almi Domingo
Almi Domingo is an architect and visual artist. He is a graduate of Technological Institute of the Philippines-Manila and a product of the MetaArch Program 2016 of The Brown Bauhau Alternative School of Architecture + Design. His exploration uses etching technique of acrylic sheets resulting to a dynamic interplay of bold geometric elements. His works were showcased at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, Raffles Design Institute, Gateway Gallery, Art Camp, Art Fair Philippines and at the Art in the Park. He is a founding member of The Authenticity Zero Collective.
Walther Ocampo
Walther Ocampo is an architect, visual artist, and a pedagogue. For him architecture and art should act together in an alchemic platform so as to produce a more poetic and authentic environment. He has a deep interest in the language of geometry, nature, and complex relationship of things and phenomena. He uses different inquiry tools (dialectics, metaphysics, phenomenology, deconstruction) in navigating the said complexities. In both architecture and art, he explores new aesthetic and theoretical directions through speculations, oppositions, diagramming, and re-constructions. This system manifests in his drawings, paintings, sculptures, and installations. He has exhibited-curated at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Museum of Contemporary Art and Design-Manila, Art Fair Philippines, MoCAF, School of Design and Arts – DLS-CSBenilde, Raffles Design Institute, Eagle Eye Art Gallery, Artablado, 29 Kapitolyo Art Space, 22nd&5th Gallery, Luinette Gallery, R Gallery, Galerie Roberto, Art Camp, Gateway Gallery, Art in the Park. In 2018, he launched his first solo show about the type of architecture that cannot be built and must not be built. His sculpture entry received an Honorable Mention award in the GSIS 2022 National Art Competition. He was the founding director of The Brown Bauhaus Alternative School of Architecture + Design, the first of its kind in the Philippines; and he’s the founding director of The Authenticity Zero Collective.
He is currently an assistant professor in the architecture program of the De La salle-College of St. Benilde. He holds an architecture degree from the Technological University of the Philippines and a graduate degree in architecture education from Mapua Institute of Technology. He joined and trained in the Visiting School SE Asia Program of the Architectural Association School of Architecture London, URBEX (Urban Exploration): Seizing the Emptiness Masterclass by the University of Novi Sad Serbia, and the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale Philippine Pavilion.
Robin Ravago
Robin Ravago is an architect and artist based in Manila. His works revolve around the formal qualities of objects and its potential relationships – explored through drawings, photographs, installations, and objects. He already participated in numerous exhibitions at De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, Escolta Collective, MoCAF, Art in the Park, Art Fair Philippines, The Grey Space, Tagaytay Art Fair, The Manila Bang Show, Art Camp, Backroom Gallery, Gateway Gallery, and at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
He attended The Brown Bauhaus’ MetaArch Advanced Course in Modern Aesthetics. He holds a degree in architecture from the De La Salle College of St. Benilde. Cultural Journeys: Exploring Binondo and Baguio
From January 15 to January 18, the contestants will embark on an exciting cultural journey. The first stop is Binondo, the world’s oldest Chinatown, on January 15. This tour will offer an in-depth exploration of Filipino-Chinese culture, food, and heritage, with stops at historical landmarks, temples, and local eateries.
The journey continues from January 16 to January 18 in Baguio, where the contestants will immerse themselves in the beauty of the mountain city. Notable spots like Burnham Park, Mines View Park, and the Strawberry Farm will be visited, while the cool climate and rich cultural heritage of Baguio are celebrated. A special Culture Night will take place on January 17, where contestants will dress in native costumes to honor Filipino traditions. This event is a collaboration between Mr. and Ms. Chinatown Global, the Association of Baguio Chinese Filipino Youth Inc., The Orchard Hotel Baguio, and Megapines Realty & Development, Inc., emphasizing the connection between Filipino and Chinese cultures.
Winners’ Night: Crowning the Next Face of Chinatown
The competition will culminate on January 20, 2025, with the Winners’ Night at Hilton Manila, Newport World Resorts. The event will be hosted by Janeena Chan and Nicole Cordoves, with a special performance by Korean Singer, Mr. Kim Won Shik also known as Ravi.
Kim Won Shik, also known as Ravi, is a South Korean rapper, singer, and songwriter, former member of the boy group VIXX, and founder of the record labels Groovl1n and The L1VE. He was honored with the Best Theme Song award at the 29th Asian Television Awards for his performance of “To Be With You,” the theme song of the Philippine adaptation of the hit K-drama What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, and will also perform a few songs at the Winners’ Night.
The crowning ceremony will showcase elegant crowns, meticulously crafted by a leading Hong Kong jewelry manufacturer. These crowns symbolize core Confucian values: Hé (Harmony), Zhōng (Loyalty), and Zhì (Wisdom). They will be awarded to the Grand Winner, 1st Runner-Up, and 2nd Runner-Up. Additionally, the People’s Choice Award, presented by Eventista, will honor the Top 5 contestants, celebrating their exceptional public support and popularity.
The brand Christelle by Nannette will also be prominently featured at this prestigious event.

His presidency, which spanned nearly two decades, was a period of dynamic change, characterized by innovation and growth that cemented Mapúa’s stature as a top university locally and internationally.
Under his stewardship, Mapúa realized its vision of becoming one of the world’s best universities, as recognized by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Through his leadership, Mapúa also expanded its reach beyond Metro Manila by establishing Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna (MMCL) and Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao (MMCM), bringing the institution’s brand of educational excellence to new regions.
