Unilab, QC LGU Recognize Top Lying-In Clinics for Excellence in Maternal Care

An increasing number of women choose to have their babies born in primary healthcare facilities such as public and private lying-in clinics.  The Department of Health has set the standards for these facilities to ensure the safety of the mothers while providing essential services and health education on the cascade of care for both mommy and baby.  

Dr. Maria Lourdes E. Eleria, Acting City Health Officer II of the Quezon City Health Department, re-affirmed the value of the Seal of Excellence Awards as it raised the LGU’s standards for the protection and safety of mothers and children. 

Recognizing the role of private lying-in clinics as partners in maternal and neonatal care, the Quezon City Government, through the QC Health Department (QCHD), and Unilab Inc. have been recognizing these private health facilities with a Seal of Excellence for achieving all Maternal, Newborn, Child Health and Nutrition (MNCHN) indicators based on the Department of Health’s MNCHN Tools. This year, the Seal of Excellence was awarded to 42 private lying-in clinics, the highest number of honorees in its 8-year run.

For the year 2024, there are 60 private lying-in clinics listed in Quezon City, 70% of which have met the standards of the Seal of Excellence. This is the highest percentage of compliant lying-ins in Quezon City on a yearly assessment. These standards include Updated Licensing and Accreditation; Compliance with Service Delivery Network requirements; Provision of quality MNCHN services such as counseling, immunization, newborn screening, and family planning; along Adherence to Policies and Ordinances of the City Health Office including compliance with the Milk Code to support optimal infant and young child feeding practices.

Singapore Embassy Hosts Lunar New Year Reception, Strengthens Business and Investment Ties with the Philippines

The Singapore Embassy in Manila hosted a lively Lunar New Year Reception to celebrate the Year of the Snake, bringing together business partners, investors, and stakeholders to mark the occasion and reaffirm Singapore’s role as a key economic partner of the Philippines. The event was held on 12 February 2025, the 15th and final day of the Lunar New Year, at the Singapore Embassy in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

The 120 guests were treated to an energetic traditional Lion Dance. They also participated in the “Lo Hei”, an uniquely Singaporean tradition of tossing a prosperity salad to bring good fortune and good luck. The festive gathering was graced by Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano. Other guests included leaders from the private sector, key industry stakeholders, and government representatives, reinforcing Singapore’s commitment to expanding trade and investment with the Philippines.

In her remarks, Singapore Ambassador Constance See underscored the robust trade and investment ties between Singapore and the Philippines, highlighting Singapore’s position as a top foreign investor in the country.

Sun Pera-Aralan was launched in 2018 by the Sun Life Foundation in response to the PHP 300 billion debt crisis faced by public school teachers. The program’s primary tool, the Peso Sobre aids teachers in effectively managing their cash flow. Nüwa Manila and Nüwa Spa at City of Dreams Manila earn 8th and 6th Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star ratings

Manila, Philippines – City of Dreams Manila’s Nüwa Manila and Nüwa Spa once again receive the illustrious Forbes Travel Guide (FTG) Five Star rating, earning their eighth and sixth awards, respectively, in the 2025 Star Awards.  The world-renowned authority on excellence in luxury hospitality announced the much-awaited global awardees list on February 12.

These accolades account for the collective 18 FTG Star awards of City of Dreams Manila, along with its two other hotel brands – Nobu Hotel Manila and Hyatt Regency Manila — receiving Four Stars. The hotels have also maintained their respective ratings since 2018, and Nuwa Spa since 2020.

FTG compiles its ratings using an objective, independent and data-driven process. Incognito inspectors pose as everyday guests and stay at hotels, board cruises, receive spa services and dine at fine restaurants around the world. They test some 900 exacting standards — emphasizing exceptional service, which accounts for 70 percent of a property’s rating. Newer standards focus on the guest experience. Green Heroes of Cebu: How Local Communities Are Benefitting From Mangrove Planting

MANILA, Philippines — Empowered communities in San Remigio, Daanbantayan, and Medellin, Cebu, took the lead in a massive mangrove reforestation project resulting in 800,000 mangroves planted by the year 2024, through the partnership between GCash and the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI). The collaboration underscores the local communities’ active role in driving ecological and community resilience through RAFI’s One to Tree program.

Since partnering in 2020, GCash and RAFI have launched widespread community-based projects dedicated to reviving biodiversity, protecting coastal communities, and mitigating the effects of climate change through the innovative in-app feature, GForest. This is where users can convert energy points earned from digital transactions (such as paying bills, sending money, or buying load) and digitally plant trees– which are then turned into real trees planted in key provinces across the Philippines, inspiring collective action for a sustainable future through reforestation and agroforestry.

Also vital to the partnership’s mission is integrating livelihood opportunities for farmers and fisherfolk into the mangrove reforestation initiatives. In Cebu, the collaboration with RAFI through the One to Tree program is powered by various People’s Organizations belonging to these agricultural sectors, resulting in the planting of mangroves, as well as other diverse  native and indigenous tree species around the province, while promoting long-term community well-being. Today, the communities are dubbed ‘green heroes’ and celebrated as the faces of collective effort and a greener future for the Philippines.”

Coastal Communities Unlocking Better Quality of Life

Under the One to Tree program, the People’s Organizations in Cebu have learned the fundamentals of planting native mangrove species, monitoring the environment, and maintaining the ecological conditions for their plants’ continued growth.

Mangrove planting has improved the overall quality of life for these local Cebuano communities, as its benefits– which include carbon sequestration, reinforcement of biodiversity, and coastal protection– have manifested through cleaner air, flourishing marine wildlife, and coastal communities safeguarded against storm surges and other extreme weather events.

“Masayang-masaya po [ang mga PO natin dahil] nadagdagan ‘yung dami ng mga isda na nakukuha nila at dumadami rin ‘yung pagkain na pwede nilang ihain sa kanilang mesa.” shared Jay Carin Baya, Project Officer of the One to Tree program. (“Our POs are very happy because the amount of fish they are able to catch has increased and the amount of food they are able to bring to their tables has increased as well.”)

“We need [this kind of] protection para sa mga naninirahan dito sa mga coastal area. ‘Yung [pinakamaganda ay] naging malinis ‘yung hangin para sa mga tao na naninirahan dito.” (“Those living in the coastal areas need this kind of protection. Best of all, the air is much cleaner for everyone living in the area.”)

A Grassroots Movement Leading To Fulfilling Livelihoods

In addition to educating Cebuanos and encouraging them to reinforce and protect the mangroves, GCash and RAFI’s partnership has paved the way for sustainable livelihoods for farmers and fisherfolk in the region.

Collaborating with local communities in mangrove restoration directly creates employment opportunities and uplifting of local workers through skill-building initiatives related to environmental management and sustainable agriculture. Ultimately, the aim is to create a self-sustaining environment while enhancing food security, protecting infrastructure, and fostering community well-being.

“Nakatulong [kami] sa mga mahihirap. ‘Yung iba, kahit hindi miyembro [ng PO], pinatanim rin namin [ng mga puno] para magkapera. Lahat kami nakabenipisyo sa binigay ng GCash,” recalled Lolita Tampus, PO President of Rural Workers Association of Tindog (RWAT). (“We were able to help the less fortunate. We let some others, even if they weren’t members of our PO, plant trees, too, so they could earn money. All of us were able to benefit from what GCash had given us.”)

Empowering Local Communities Through strong partnerships

GCash and RAFI hope to take initiatives like GForest to more coastal communities across the Philippines. Together, they invite users to join the advocacy by using GForest to plant digital trees, which GCash and RAFI work to transform into actual trees planted.
